Remembering our engagement...

As part of our family history tour we wanted to take the kids to the spot where Will proposed to me on December 8th, 1999.  We sauntered our way around the Public Garden and guessed which bench the engagement happened on.  Neither Will or I could remember which bench exactly.  Will (on an earlier business trip) had scouted the area out and picked the bench he was most certain he proposed on.  So we are pretty sure.

Anyway, we sat down and Will started telling the kids the story.  We came to the garden after watching the Nutcracker ballet performed by the Boston City Ballet.  Will brought a blanket and we walked through the garden to this bench.  We talked and kissed for a few minutes then Will started talking serious about how much he loved me.  Then he gave me an empty root beer bottle with a note rolled up inside.  When I went to open it he said I couldn't until we were married.

Then he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.  I was surprised and said "Really!" about a million times before finally saying "yes".  Then Will picked me up, the bottle rolled off my lap and broke on the ground.  Thankfully, Will had saved both bottles from our very first date to use for the notes.  So he was able to recreate the bottle and notes for our wedding later.

Now, when Will was retelling our engagement story, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a jewelry box.  I didn't know what was going on.  He got down on one knee and re-proposed, complete with a new (bigger) diamond ring.  I was so surprised!  I cried ( you can see my stunned face in the first picture).

Really, I couldn't have been more surprised.  Apparently, Clare and Adell knew about the plan for months.  Will told them about his idea one night while tucking them into bed.  They thought he should get me a new ring too and he agreed.  Some how, all three of them kept the secret for months!

Sweet Lorien managed to take a few photos of the event from all angles.  I'm so glad she did.  I love these pictures and love remembering the surprise.
