Lorien's confession...
I'm putting away Christmas today. Part one: take all of the ornaments and lights off the tree. It is a long job but I enjoy it because I get to do it slowly. Unlike decorating the tree, none of the kids want to help with this job. So I get to take each ornament off the tree and remember where we got it and when. I get to be flooded with the memories of Christmas and vacations past. I get to coo over their little kid homemade ornaments and see their old pictures.
This year, while we were decorating the tree Lorien made a confession. She pointed out her two start ornaments from the fourth grade. I always wondered why she had two and why one was so much crisper than the other. Lorien confessed: when she was in the fourth grade she made the ornament on the left first. She hated the way it turned out so much! The lines were sloppy and she didn't like the school picture they had to use. SO she told her teacher that her parents were divorced. And asked if she could make a second ornament for her second tree so her parent's feelings wouldn't be hurt.
That's right.
She lied about her parents being happily married to get to make a second ornament.
Obviously, it worked. She made a second ornament with more careful line drawings and her teacher snapped a picture Lorien liked more for the center.
Mission accomplished?
Lorien is full of fascinating tales from her childhood. I never know what is going to come out next.
