Josh Guptil was a kid in my high school. We weren't close friends but my high school was tiny so everyone knew everyone and we were all "friends". I walked into a conversation Josh and Brianne Aspinall were having last night. Josh was talking about his house and how much he loves to cook breakfast for people. I walked over and Josh said he always invites people who are in from out of town over for breakfast but they never come over. He turned to me and said, "I'll even invite you but you won't be there." I took the challenge saying I'd be the first and got his address. I didn't really plan on going...
Later in the evening, Travis told me he was talking with Gup (our nickname for Josh in high school...you know why) and Josh asked if I would really show up. Travis responded in the negative, "She's still on California time, there's no way she will show up for breakfast." So I felt like my reputation was at stake and we HAD to go. Sunday morning (this morning) we woke up and made the hour drive from Camie's house to West Baldwin, stopping for orange juice along the way.
Josh was pretty surprised and pleased when we actually showed up (around 10:30 am). We sat around his bar while he cooked and told us about his house. He built the house and designed it. It was a decade-long project but it is beautiful! We talked about the reunion last night, laughed some more and marveled at where some of us ended up. We learned about Josh's job and his two teenage daughters. It was a lovely morning.
After saying our goodbyes, I had to leave a "review" on Facebook:
A review of Joshua Guptill ‘s Bacon Breakfast Bar: the setting of this quaint breakfast stop is not to be missed. The rustic log cabin is made charming with custom rough and smooth hewn wood. The 20 foot walls and ceilings are beset with clear windows offering a stunning view of the Baldwin woods. The food was delicious! I highly recommend the pancakes and bacon, locally sourced of course. However, my highest praise goes to the chef. He was professional and entertaining as he made breakfast in the open seating kitchen. Not often are diners allowed to watch the master at work, let alone distract with conversation and local goings on. Over all 5 out of 5, totally recommend!
It was tongue-in-cheek but sincere. We had a nice time and hopefully got the word out so more people will show up for breakfast!
